Smartshot I Elmet’s intelligent cold runner system for LSR injection molding uses high-resolution data to continuously analyze the injection process, automatically balance the cavities and optimize the nozzle pin positions. No pressure sensors are required in the cavities. Thermal changes during ramp-up are also detected and compensated for by continuously adjusting the needle positions. The system can position each nozzle needle servo-electrically with an accuracy of 2 microns.

Benefits Optimized molding and shorter ramp-up time, especially in family molds with cavities of varying sizes. Instead of manually fine-tuning cavities individually, Smartshot I automatically adjusts the nozzle positions to match the specific filling behavior of each cavity. In tests with a 16-cavity mold, only 20 shots were needed to perfectly balance the cold runner, reducing ramp-up time by up to 95 percent. Smartshot I is AI-ready and more features are on the way, such as online rheometry for real-time measurement of material viscosity and material fluctuation detection without external sensors.
