Tomra, which manufactures a range of sensor-based sorting solutions for plastics recycling and other industries, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Brothers Petter and Tore Planke founded the company in Norway on April 1, 1972, developing the first fully automated reverse vending machine to collect empty bottles for recycling.

The company today employs more than 4,600 people globally, with annual sales of $1.1 billion.

“Fifty years after its humble beginnings, Tomra can be proud of the fact that it is a highly respected global market leader," said President and CEO Tove Andersen.
