SEAMHex Metrom’s new 3-D printer features screw extrusion additive manufacturing (SEAM) technology developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology in Germany. The extruder head can process standard resin pellets. The printer’s build platform is mounted on six actuator legs that move with parallel kinematic motion to provide six-axis capabilities. It has been tested with a range of resins, including PC, TPEs, carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide 6 and PC/ABS.

What’s new? The SEAMHex printer, which is now available in the U.S.

Benefits Speed and lower operation costs. For comparable-sized objects, printing times can be reduced by as much as 70 percent compared to other methods of 3-D printing. Because it can print using standard pellets, raw material costs can be reduced by as much as 95 percent. Wall thicknesses can be varied within a layer by adjusting table speed and the extruder’s output rate.
