The best beside-the-press granulator is probably one that you don’t hear, never bump into when you are in a hurry and is cost-efficient to operate.
Wittmann Group expanded its line of S-Max granulators with the S-Max Primus and did not forget the sound-deadening material to keep the operation quiet or the compact footprint so it tucks in beside the injection molding machine. It is also designed for low-maintenance operation and long service life, the company said.
The low-cost S-Max Primus screenless granulator was introduced at K 2025. It is available in two sizes, one for use with molding machines up to 150 tons of clamping force and the second for molding machines up to 400 tons of clamping force.
There are three other beside-the-press lines in the S-Max series, plus three more designed for central scrap reclamation.
The S-Max 2 Primus model has a cutting chamber of 9.4 inches by 9.8 inches and two cutting blades. Motor output is 0.75 kilowatt. Throughput is approximately 17.6 pounds per hour. Maximum throughput depends on the material, geometry of runners or parts being reduced and regrind size.
The S-Max 3 Primus has a cutting chamber of 9.4 inches by 15.7 inches and three cutting blades. Motor output is 1.5 kilowatts. Throughput is 44 pounds per hour.
The S-Max Primus granulators operate at a low speed up to 27 rpm at 50 hertz (Hz). They can provide in-line recycling of all engineering plastics, including styrene and acrylate plastics and glass-fiber-reinforced materials.
The low speed provides uniform grain size for the regrind, reduces dust and noise, causes less wear on the cutting tools and minimizes energy use.
Since the S-Max Primus does not have a screen, the cutting chamber is easily accessible for cleaning, which facilitates faster material changes.
The regrind collection bin is made of stainless steel. A viewing window provides visibility to the cutting chamber.
The feeding hopper has sound-dampening material between two sheets of stainless steel to reduce noise when the materials hits the inside walls.
To prevent blocking of material, the downstream flexible hose to evacuate regrind has a slanted front cut, and airflow on the outlet pipe is adjustable.
Beside-the-press granulators are frequently squeezed into tight spaces. The S-Max 2 Primus is 27.1 inches wide, 27.4 inches long and 52.6 inches high. The S-Max 3 Primus is 27.1 inches wide, 33.5 inches long and 55.1 inches high.
