Injection molding machinery pioneer Glenn H. Frohring dies
Glenn H. Frohring, a pioneer in the North American plastics processing machinery industry, died July 18. He was 90 years old.
Frohring founded Newbury Industries in 1957 and led the company until selling it to Heico Companies in 1993. Van Dorn Demag later acquired the business.
Newbury Industries was known for its compact vertical injection molding presses, Mini-Jector machines and shuttle-type designs.
He was the father of Glenn W. Frohring, co-owner of Absolute Haitian and Absolute Robot, who keeps a Newbury press in the lobby of Absolute Haitian's facility in Parma, Ohio.
Ohio-based Newbury Industries was one of the first makers of injection molding machines in North America. Frohring and his family consolidated three firms to create Newbury Industries – R.L. Frohring Machine Co., owned by Glenn Frohring’s brother; Glenn Machine & Service Corp., owned by Glenn Frohring; and a firm owned by Glenn Frohring’s father that made Mini-Jector injection presses.
Van Dorn Demag closed the Newbury headquarters plant in 1996 and moved production to its facilities in Cleveland and South Carolina. The Newbury headquarters plant had capacity to produce 420 machines a year.
Although the Newbury brand is no longer produced, its machines are still in use and available on the used machinery market.
Frohring studied physics at the Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University. Survivors include his wife, Joretta, to whom he was married for 48 years, and three children.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
