C-Sert repairs C-Sert Manufacturing’s C-Sert self-tapping inserts can be used to repair damaged holes in injection molding machine platens. Threads in the holes can become worn and stripped over time, due to use and frequent mold changes; the C-Serts can be inserted to replace the threads. C-Serts are self-tapping and self-aligning, so they install straight into damaged holes. The company guarantees against thread wear, pull-out and back-out.
What’s new? The C-Sert Installation System. The kit — devised by C-Sert owner Carl Strom — includes a magnetic drill and annular cutters — tools normally used for other applications that he realized could be used to make C-Sert installation easier. The kit also comprises a 60-degree centering device and paste coolant.
Benefits Fast, easy, safe and cost-effective installation of C-Serts. One person working alone, without the use of overhead cranes or other machinery, can operate the 29-pound drill, which in combination with the cutters, can open up holes of up to 1.75 inches in diameter. Using the centering device, the worker can position the drill squarely on the platen hole, preventing any misalignment. Placed into the cutter, a teaspoon of the paste coolant melts as the cutter heats up, keeping the coolant on the cutting surfaces. The coolant addresses the shortcomings of gravity-fed coolant systems, which don’t work on vertical surfaces, such as platens. Using the new system, C-Sert users can repair damaged holes in around 10-15 minutes. C-Sert is making the installation system — with components made by other companies — available with no markup. In all, the complete system costs around $1,000 — less than half the cost of a single large magnetic drill.
