CNC tool grinder boosts one-pass productivity

ANCA's FX5 gains high-power spindle, allowing larger-diameter tools to be finished with a single pass.

FX5 ANCA’s FX5 linear two-wheel pack changer machine is designed for grinding cylindrical tools with small to medium diameters and is suitable for tasks ranging from regrinding through full production. It can provide unmanned operation when combined with an optional robot loader.

What’s new? More spindle power. The FX5 has been upgraded from its 9.5-kilowatt (kW) grinding spindle to a spindle rated at 12 kW of peak power, as well as an option for a high-powered 19-kW spindle.

Benefits Improved productivity. It is common practice to keep spindle load between 30 percent and 40 percent for fluting operations to extend wheel life and decrease wheel load, and to use a second fluting pass if needed. The 12-kW spindles can comfortably grind endmills with a 10mm diameter in a single pass, and the 19-kW spindle option can make single-pass grinds of 12mm endmills — an increase in efficiency that becomes important as batch size increases.
