Milling cutters Mapal has expanded its milling cutter offerings to provide more options for lightweight materials such as composites.

What's new? Tools for materials used in lightweighting applications. They include OptiMill-Thermoplastic, OptiMill-Thermoplastic-FR for fiber-reinforced plastics, OptiMill- Composite-UD and OptiMill-Honeycomb for machining honeycombs.

Benefits More options. The new products address specific challenges faced by makers of  lightweight products. For example, OptiMill-Thermoplastic has very sharp cutting edges for the reliable machining of thermoplastics. Its special geometry not only ensures the optimum discharge of chips, but also curbs heat buildup during milling. Another tool, the OptiMill-Composite-UD is designed for the milling of fiber-composite materials, such as carbon-fiber- reinforced plastic, that are either difficult to machine or very thin. With its special  geometry, the diamond-coated milling cutter produces cuts that prevent delaminations and fiber projections.
