PLASTICS California Fly-In highlights recycling as a policy priority

The March event was part of the association’s efforts to engage constructively with policymakers at both the state and federal levels.

Key Highlights

  • Plastics industry leaders met with California legislators to discuss improving recycling infrastructure and supporting sustainable materials management.
  • The fly-in highlighted the role of plastics across sectors like healthcare, construction and consumer goods, emphasizing the need for effective recycling policies.
  • Participants stressed the importance of collaboration between industry and policymakers to develop practical, data-informed recycling solutions.
  • California’s influence makes it a key state for advancing policies that promote a circular economy and environmental sustainability.
  • Ongoing engagement aims to shape innovative policies that keep materials in use and support industry growth.

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) recently brought industry leaders to Sacramento for a California Legislative Fly-In, engaging directly with state policymakers on the future of plastics recycling and materials management.

Held in March at the California State Capitol, the fly-in brought together representatives from across the plastics value chain to discuss the role of plastics in modern manufacturing and the importance of practical, effective recycling policies.

At the center of the nation’s most influential plastics policy discussion, California continues to shape how materials are managed, recovered and reused. The fly-in provided an opportunity for industry stakeholders to share on-the-ground perspectives with lawmakers as conversations around recycling infrastructure, packaging policy and sustainability continue to evolve.

Bringing industry perspectives to policymakers

Throughout the event, PLASTICS members met with legislators and staff to highlight how plastics are used across critical sectors — including healthcare, construction, packaging and consumer goods — and how recycling systems support both environmental and economic outcomes.

Discussions focused on advancing solutions that strengthen recycling infrastructure, improve material recovery and support continued innovation across the industry.

“California has long been a leader in environmental policy, and the plastics industry shares the goal of building stronger, more effective recycling systems,” said Ivy Brittain, regional director of state government affairs at PLASTICS. “By working collaboratively with lawmakers and stakeholders, we can advance policies that improve recycling outcomes while ensuring the products Californians rely on every day remain affordable and sustainable.”

A collaborative approach to recycling policy

The fly-in reflects PLASTICS’ broader efforts to engage constructively with policymakers at both the state and federal levels. As recycling policies continue to develop, direct engagement between industry and lawmakers remains essential to ensuring policies are informed by real-world operations and data.

California’s size and economic influence make it a key state for advancing conversations around materials management and circularity. By connecting policymakers with local industry experts, the fly-in helped provide greater visibility into how recycling systems function in practice — and where opportunities exist for improvement.

Looking ahead

PLASTICS is eager to continue working with state leaders, industry partners and stakeholders to support policies that strengthen recycling systems and promote innovation across the plastics value chain.

As discussions around sustainability and materials management continue to evolve, ongoing engagement like the California fly-in as well as the industry’s DC fly-in, held in April, will play an important role in shaping practical, solutions-oriented approaches that keep materials in use and support a more circular economy.
