eBook: Materials for the Automotive Market

April 19, 2023
Resin makers work to meet the challenges of lightweighting and electrification.

Plastics are at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution. New materials are being developed to manage intense heat generated by battery packs that ride just beneath the passenger compartment. Likewise for lightweight springs, powertrain and underbody components to replace steel and further reduce weight.

Plastics offer automakers opportunities to design single components that previously consisted of multiple parts, which reduces vehicle costs. It is also offering new ways to embed sensors that are critical to EV performance.

Material makers are tasked with creating materials to handle tougher, new requirements and at the same time help automakers reduce their carbon footprint. They are also actively pursuing better ways to recycle the new materials.
