Uniloy showcases blow molding technology and global growth at Michigan open house

Customers saw machinery in action at the July 23 event, while executives discussed manufacturing expansion and future product launches.

Uniloy’s open house July 23 highlighted its range of blow molding technologies, manufacturing expansion and reinvestment in shuttle machines.

The company welcomed more than 60 customers and nine vendors to its Tecumseh, Mich., headquarters for a day of demonstrations and educational programs.

Company CEO Gary W. Riley addressed open house attendees at a dinner July 22, during which he discussed the company’s recent developments and achievements.

The company’s former owners shut down Uniloy’s Italian manufacturing operation in 2015, which produced shuttle blow molding machines.

Riley talked about how the current ownership has re-established the Italian shuttle business, selling 90 of the machines since 2020. The company has introduced approximately 20 new electric models.

He also discussed Uniloy’s opening of a new manufacturing plant in Penang, Malaysia.

“We're launching production of shuttles in Malaysia for the ASEAN market,” Riley said. “We're working with a customer there for 20- and 25-liter jerry cans. There are some other new things coming there. We're working on a mold acquisition, so we'll be building our own molds there.”

He said that Uniloy has improved its reciprocating UR 100 product line, achieving more output with new high-cavitation machines.

“We just put a machine, a couple of them, out west that are 24 cavities, so they'll produce 200,000 bottles a day,” Riley said. “That’s our highest output that we just launched.”

He said Uniloy plans to introduce a new all-electric blow molding machine named the 350X at NPE2027 in Orlando that will be smaller and more energy-efficient than previous similar machines.

“It'll be 20 percent more productive than a historic six-cavity 350 series machine,” Riley said. “This will fill the hole in our product line that was created when the 350R was discontinued.”

The 350X will be engineered for production of dairy and other containers, such as gallon milk jugs.

During the open house, Uniloy offered demonstrations of a UCS 30.ED three-layer shuttle machine, a UR 100 12-cavity reciprocating machine, and a UIB 199 injection blow molding machine.

“The machine we have out there, the injection blow machine, is a three-layer, multi-layer machine,” said Chuck Flammer, VP of machine sales. “We're the only ones in the market that produce a three-layer machine for injection blow, and either for a barrier or for using PCR, basically it’s to meet some sustainability goals.”

Uniloy also highlighted its mold-making operation at the Tecumseh headquarters.

“We do build molds,” Flammer said. “We have our facility here. Also, we have a facility in Fremont [Ohio] that we took over some years ago, and we've made some very big investments into this over the last couple of years.”

The open house also included a full day of educational programs on topics including the future of extrusion blow molding, selecting grinders, vision systems, material handling and collecting and analyzing production data.
