ABB Ability This electrical distribution control system from ABB connects a facility's electrical equipment with the Internet of Things to allow for cloud-based energy management, remote supervision and diagnostics. The company based the system on cloud architecture that it developed in conjunction with Microsoft for data collection, processing and storage. The system leverages the built-in sensing and connectivity of ABB circuit breakers to provide the information and control functions needed to reduce operating costs. Users can access ABB Ability via smart phone, tablet or personal computer. In addition to hardware, users must purchase a license from the company.
What's new? U.S. availability. The company introduced the system in the U.S. a few months ago after a European launch in 2016. It has been used in various factories, office buildings and mills, as well as by providers of utilities.
Benefits Optimized performance of a plant's electrical system for up to a 30 percent reduction in operating costs. Reductions in peak power consumption can result in 20 percent savings on electricity bills; an additional 10 percent can be saved through improved efficiency.
