These new, noncontact, magnetic interlock switches from Rockford Systems prevent equipment from running if the guarding is not properly positioned.

Magnetic safety switches These new, noncontact, magnetic interlock switches from Rockford Systems prevent equipment from running if the guarding is not properly positioned and have applications in a wide variety of industries, including plastics. They are suited for use with many types of guards, such as lift-off, sliding and hinged guards, and various chip shields, including those used on machining centers for mold making. Additionally, the switches can be used for some types of perimeter guard access doors and movable barriers. Each switch comes with a 13-foot cable. Prices range from $325 to $525.

What's new? The switches, which became available a few months ago.

Benefits Versatility and compact, robust construction. The switches come in a variety of shapes and sizes, most with a very small footprint for use in tight spaces. They can handle exposure to smoke, cutting fluids, coolants, water, metal shavings, chips and debris, and are built to resist the shock and vibrations of heavy machinery. Some models have enclosures rated for use in wash-down environments where they would be sprayed with water and cleaning chemicals. Additionally, unlike equipment with mechanical switches, it's easy to ascertain whether someone has tried to bypass the tamper-resistant switch.
