Pyrolysis leads way in plastics recycling patents

April 22, 2025
Report also shows interest in metal-catalyzed depolymerization and hydrothermal processes.

Chemical recycling by pyrolysis is getting the most attention from researchers looking for new methods to recycle plastics, according to a report from a UK law firm that tracks patents.

The report, which studied patents from 1993 to 2022, also showed interest in other technologies, such as metal-catalyzed depolymerization and hydrothermal processes.

Eastman Chemical, LG Chem and SABIC filed the most patent applications related to chemical recycling.

A pilot project from Aduro Clean Technologies in London, Ontario, using a water-based technology and widely available equipment, is due to come online in Q3. The report highlights the project as an example of new processes that could have an industrial future.

The full report from Appleyard Lees in Cambridge, UK, is covered in Chemical Processing, an Endeavor Business Media sister publication to Plastics Machinery & Manufacturing. Read it here.
