Hyman “Hy” Shuman, a co-founder of Shuman Plastics Inc., died March 25 in Buffalo, N.Y., at 94.
Shuman was wounded in Okinawa, Japan, in WWII, and on his return to Buffalo he joined his father in a scrap business. His brother, Charles, joined them, and in 1962 the brothers founded Shuman Plastics Inc., shifting from paper, metal and glass recycling to recycling and trading plastics. He helped expand the company to include operations in Canada, Europe and Asia, and in 1982 launched Dyna-Purge purging compounds. Shuman retired in 1995, and the family connections continue for the business, which is now owned and managed by Ken and Dan Shuman, his nephews.
Shuman is survived by longtime companion Nancy Rufola; his daughters Miriam and Aviva Shuman; grandson Oliver; and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, people may donate in his memory to a charitable cause of their choice.
