TWW Micro Extruder Employing a single vertical conical screw, this micro extruder can be used as a laboratory test model mounted on a 3-D gantry for 3-D printing. Applications also could include materials and processing research. The extruder will be displayed at the booth of R&B Plastics Machinery LLC, Saline, Mich.
What's new? The patent-pending micro extruder, the result of four years of collaborative efforts involving its inventor, Tim Womer, the president of TWWomer; Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and Cincinnati Inc., Harrison, Ohio.
Benefits Efficiency and versatility. Unlike other extruders for 3-D printing, which can handle only micro pellets, the invention uses a screw with a unique helical compressed channel that generates pressurized heat for faster, more efficient compression, melting and mixing of standard-sized pellets; it can also handle extra-small pellets. Material passes from the input end toward the output end of the extruder's unique internal channel.
