Techniplas LLC, a designer and manufacturer of automotive products, molds and tooling based in Novi, Mich., has opened an additive manufacturing facility in Ventura, Calif. It currently houses a dozen 3-D printers, and the company expects to add 20 more before the end of the year, with the ultimate goal of developing lighter and stronger parts. Techniplas is using advanced additive-metal techniques to create hybrid tooling, a combination of traditional tool and mold bases with modular inserts that are 3-D printed to shorten production runs.
