Makino's new EDM features X-, Y- and Z-axis travel lengths of about 52 inches by 40 inches by 20 inches, with an optional length of 24 inches along the Z-axis.

U1310 wire electrical discharge machine (EDM) Makino's new EDM features X-, Y- and Z-axis travel lengths of about 52 inches by 40 inches by 20 inches, with an optional length of 24 inches along the Z-axis. The standard machine configuration can accommodate a workpiece with a maximum weight of 13,000-plus pounds and dimensions of about 79 inches by 63 inches by 20 inches. Makino's Hyper-i control is included with the machine. What's new? The machine, which was released in the fall.

Benefits Ease of operation, machining speed and accuracy, especially with large applications, and smooth surface finishes. Makino has designed the machine to provide similar performance capabilities to that of smaller wire EDM platforms. The machine, which is capable of operating with wires with diameters of 0.2mm, 0.25mm and 0.3mm, can produce parts to within 3 microns of the intended shape. A dielectric fluid cooling unit helps provide greater thermal stability, reduce distortion and ensure accuracy. In addition, with the flushing enhancements and special generator upgrades of the optional High Energy Applied Technology (H.E.A.T.) configuration, users can achieve 43 percent faster machining times while reducing wire consumption by as much as 33 percent. To enhance accessibility during loading and setups, the U1310 has an ergonomic, three-sided drop tank system. The design allows operators to adjust the work tank height to match the workpiece, giving them an unobstructed view of the machining condition at all times.
