Drywise continuously dries FDM filament

Aug. 18, 2022
Just-in-time drying avoids problems that can be caused by moisture in 3D printed parts, including surface issues, stringing and oozing.

Drywise Designed to head off problems from overly moist hygroscopic fused-deposition-modeling (FDM) printer filaments, Thought3D’s beside-the-printer dryer routes the first 3.9-foot length of filament from a spool through its heated interior. After an initial drying cycle of less than 50 minutes, the filament runs through the printer. The dryer continuously dries even very damp incoming filament sufficiently by the time it reaches the print head. Currently available for use with 2.85mm filament, for FDM printers from Ultimaker, BCN3D and LulzBot, the system costs $1,899. In addition, the company expects to offer a beta version for 1.75mm filament in the first quarter of 2023.

What’s new? Drywise, which made its U.S. debut at Rapid + TCT in May. Customers can order Drywise now, and the company expects to announce a U.S. distributor soon.

Benefits Continuous print quality. Drywise provides just-in-time filament drying, as opposed to common solutions that require ovens or climate-controlled cabinets and can take up to 48 hours to work. With it, users can avoid the problems that can be caused by moisture, including part-surface issues, stringing and oozing. Drywise’s interface is user-friendly, pre-calibrated and optimized to handle each material type. Its rechargeable desiccant cartridges can be quickly exchanged to eliminate downtime.
