VC-500 AM This hybrid machine from Mazak combines 5-axis machining and additive manufacturing capabilities and is suitable for creating and repairing molds. The VC-500 AM can machine parts up to 19.7 inches in diameter, 12 inches in height and weighing up to 440 pounds. It uses direct metal deposition, which involves melting metal powder and applying the molten metal layer by layer to build part features to near net shape.

What's new? The machine, which was introduced in September at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago.

Benefits Speed and cost savings. The VC-500 AM can build part features to near net shape up to 10 times faster than comparable machines, and it doesn't waste expensive material by subtracting large amounts of metal from a solid block. Also, time to market can be reduced.
